Time To Winterize

Winter Tips
As we head into winter, your home needs some care and below are some tips.

Weather Stripping
Check the weather stripping on your doors and windows. They are easy to replace and can save you in heating costs.

Attic
If you live in a house or a townhouse and have a hatch to the attic. Check for weather stripping around the hatch. Don't be surprised if you do not see any seals. The unsealed hatch can move a large volume of warm air into your attic, costing you money. Here is a link to an article that shows you how to seal an attic. You may have multiple hatches, and check them all.

Blow Out Irrigation
Got sprinklers for your lawn or planters, well its time to shut off the main supply and blow out the lines with air. This usually costs $100-$200 based on the number of zones. Google "irrigation winterization" to find a company near you. If you have an RV, don't forget to drain and winterize the plumbing lines.

Outdoor Hose Bibs
Shut off water to exterior hose bibs. The shut off valve can be either in the mechanical closet or under the closest sink. Be sure to open the hose bib valve and drain out any left over water in the hose bib itself. If you have a bleed valve, use that to drain additional water from the line.

Driveway Cracks
Cracks in concrete are common but new ones can be prevented. When seeps into the cracks and freezes, it creates additional cracks and make the current current larger. Seal any cracks with proper sealant to prevent any further damage. Home Depot, Lowes and Rona will have options for you.
